Is it Really a Mind?

The downside of being a Daily Show fan is that Comedy Central forces folks that actually have an IQ to watch promos for Mind of Mencia.

SomethingAwful pretty much summed up the tediousness of these previews a few months back:

“Hi, I’m Carlos,” he told me. “I’m a pretty offensive guy. You never know what I’m gonna say! Pay attention, because I’m going to say something really offensive soon!”

And, on top of the boring, tired, tediousness of Mencia himself, I recently became aware that Pamela Ribon is responsible for a portion of the writing on that show.

So, essentially, not only do I have to sit through Carlos Mencia daring me to be offended by his boring bullshit, but every time I see one of those promos I’m reminded that “It’s a damned shame I have no respect for Pamie, anymore.”

And, then, after rolling my eyes, lamenting the loss of Ribon to the dark side, and sighing heavily, I have to wonder: Who the fuck actually watches Mind of Mencia?

I’m serious…

Who?

Stoners?

Parapalegics that can’t pick up the remote?

Frat boys?

Small children?

And, am I really so out of the loop on normal humanity, that I can’t figure this out on my own?

  2. Yeah, well, there’s a difference between Chappelle making fun of racism, and Mencia actually being racist. I guess the folks at Comedy Central don’t have the “Nuance Gene.”

  3. I’m totally embarrassed to say that we watch the show whenever we catch it (we don’t go out of our way to watch it) and we laugh and laugh and laugh. I know. It’s bad. Andy told me that Mary likes it, so we started watching it (and I was sure it was going to be awful) but we really couldn’t help but get into it. I really don’t think it’s racist. I think he has to be a really pro-diversity type person to be able to pay so much attention to other cultures (and ultimately make fun of them).

  4. Well, now I know… Shemsi and Andy and Mary watch it. I knew the rating were coming from somewhere—so don’t be embarrassed. Apparently, he’s a hit. As for Mencia’s racism, there’s poking fun at stereotypes, and there’s reinforcing stereotypes, and I think Mencia opts for the latter 9 times out of ten.
