Metal Moments

There are a handful of old metal songs that get stuck in my head like nothing else. It’s mostly unusual, because I don’t listen to much metal these days.

This week it’s been Dio’s “Rainbow in the Dark,” which has a bafflingly bizarre video where Dio saves some woman from a creepy perv in a porn district, presumably, using only the power of ROCK. Because, you know… he’s Dio. And, that’s his job.

I have spent days stuck with Jakyl’s “I Stand Alone” rattling around my skull, too. The video for this one is sort of sad, all things considered. Like, there’s that famous video U2 did, where they’re on top of that building, and crowds gather below for the epic U2iness of “Streets Have No Name” while cops gather to control hysterical fans, and like, angels weep and small children in Africa are fed. Well, “I Stand Alone” is sort of like that one, only it’s long-haired dudes in ripped up jeans RAWKING OUT on a trailer bed in a K-Mart parking lot, whilst shoppers mill the parking lot looking confused and small children cover their ears. Awesome.

Also, Pantera’s “This Love” is a sticky one. Now, the video for this one is just painfully early 90’s. You’ve got unnecessary amounts of dry ice fog and blue light filters in an industrial setting. Some woman in lingerie. Dudes jumping around all rage-filled in long shorts and stompy boots. And, best of all, it’s evidence that there are only two acceptable hair lengths for males—short… or long. None of this foppish, messy, perma-growing out shit that teenage boys seem to be inflicting on me on purpose these days. Oh, no. That was called, ‘the in-between stage’ and it was to be endured only if you were transitioning between Short or Long. See also: they used to let paunchy guys with no makeup be on MTV!
