Collective Technical Malfunction
If you haven’t seen the Soprano’s Finale, then QUICK! Avert your eyes.
The following statement is true, to the best of my knowledge:
the star of the episode was the cat. give the cat a golden globe award.
The cat. And, the, um, squishing.
Other than that, the finale ranks somewhere between the final episode of St. Elsewhere and the Northeast Blackout of 2003. It’ll go down in history as the “I thought the TV died” event of the decade. Then the credits roll, and you realize that no, it wasn’t technical difficulties. It’s that you’ve been duped by an wishy-washy egomaniac, all too caught up in his own cleverness.
Nikki Finke says:
Apparently, my extreme reaction was typical of many series’ fans: they crashed HBO’s website for a time tonight trying to register their outrage. HBO could suffer a wave of cancellations as a result. (Already, the pay channel’s replacement series like John from Cincinnati are getting panned.) Chase clearly didn’t give a damn about his fans. Instead, he crapped in their faces. This is why America hates Hollywood. Unlike some network series that end abruptly because broadcasters pull the plug without warning, The Sopranos has been slated for years to go off the air tonight. But instead of carefully crafted, this finale looked like it had been concocted in a day or two. (Some of the scenes were cut so abruptly, they caused whiplash.)
David Chase should probably not go out in public for a few days. Wannabe goombas might get him.

Y’know what was a gooooood series finale? (And yeh, I know, it’s like the big finale-finale for the Sopranos, whereas this particular one I’m gonna mention is, like, a first series finale, and there’s gonna be a second series…)
Ugly Betty.
Damn brillo pads I thought :)

I missed it. But, I heard that they killed off Santos, so I’m not sure I wanna bother…

I guess this makes me a complete loser. I never even watched the show before but decided it would be fun to see the last episode. Duh.
Nikki’s right, though. The cat was definitely the star.

well, i’m holding out hope that santos isn’t dead. which is kind of funny because the week prior to the finale, i’d told a friend that he was the most expendable. but i didn’t anticipate how much hilda’s grief would affect me (and yes, i know it’s just a show. blah) so i’m hoping he starts the next season in the hospital. it is still a soap opera after all, they could decapitate the man and still figure out a way to bring him back. :D

Yeah, it is a soap.
I think really, I just don’t care at the Meades or the Wilhemina drama at all. I like Betty and her family, and Amanda/Mark, but… the high drama with the millionaires? Yawn.

Awww, I liked it. (The ending, I mean—came back in time to see it but didn’t watch the whole things yet.)
To be fair, there really was no good way to end this thing. Tony Soprano dies, unimaginative cliche of the world, everybody saw it coming. The only thing worse would be Tony Soprano comes out on top of the world, puffing a cigar and grinning.
At leeast he managed to avoid both of those. Tony Soprano doomed to live out his worthless, cheesy life in a cheap diner, looking over his shoulder every minute until he either gets it or ends up like Uncle Jun. Maybe I’m easily impressed, but I thought ringing down the curtain randomly before the play was over was kind of audacious. Plus, the last scene with all those over-the-top red herring perils was funny, it is a comedy show, AND, you gotta admit, as life goes on endings go, it was more visually compelling than watching everybody eating dinner and going home to play scrabble, which is how the day would’ve ended up if they hadn’t cut out—that wouldn’t have inspired viewer outrage?

My favorite series finale so far? ER.
What? It’s still not over? Fuckit. I’m going back to bed. Wake me when they’re done.
(Seriously, ER is a shambling zombie of a series, in dire need of a cricket bat applied directly to the forehead.)

so the soprano’s was a series about opera stars and their pets?
glad i missed it. i cancelled hbo several years back. i don’t miss it. the rare show that’s worth watching from hbo will usually be available on dvd.

ER is still on the air?
— Veronica Jun 11, 12:49 PM #
Yeah, it’s still on the air, despite being pretty much completely unwatchable. And yet Wonderfalls gets canceled after four episodes. Yay TV.

I don’t have HBO so I only saw Season One on dvd. I read somewhere that Chase actually left the country, so I guess he knew he was in for it.
Loved Wonderfalls, still miss it.
Gave up on ER a few seasons ago—I regret it every time hubby turns it on and I watch it. It’s gotta go.

Yeah, he ran off to Paris.
