An Ounce of Prevention
Well, first Fox decides to legitimately entertain the idea that the Devil is responsible for the Virginia Tech killings.
Now, CNN has Ted Nugent running around claiming that he lives in a really kick-ass episode of Miami Vice: Citizens on Patrol, or something, wherein bad guys are taken down by everyday heroes that somersault behind ‘84 Firebirds.
When did Ted Nugent become a columnist? That’s about as lame at Andy Rooney’s crotchety old ass complaining about the cost of oatmeal on 60 Minutes. I mean… who cares what Ted Nugent thinks? I’m pretty sure I don’t even care what Ted Nugent thinks about guitars, let alone what he thinks about gun control in Virginia.
Thing is, see, that most people don’t live in a prime time cop drama. Life isn’t a fucking Denzel Washington movie. All these ass hats claiming that they’d have “taken out” Mr. Broken Man are full of shit.
People panic. They run. They try to stay alive. Most folks do not immediately start an inner dialogue about the merits of the second amendment when they are being shot at. And the kind of people that do are usually the kind of people that get off on the thought of shooting at people.
There is a gun in my house.
It’s not that I’m anti-gun.
I’m just anti-stupid.
And, it’s plain stupid to think that we can prevent anything with a posse of armed regulators roving the streets in a spastic haze of gunpowder and paranoia.
The “why” isn’t demonic possession, or lack of armed posses, or violent Korean movies.
Fact is, Cho was broken.
And, all the gun totin’ and prayin’ and g-rated movies in the world aren’t going to stop the odd massacre.
This is part of being human. People have all sorts of things wrong with them. Statistically, it’s inevitable that someone is going to be a murderous sociopath.
There’s no preventing that. It sucks, yes. But… it’s also inevitable.

there’s guns in my house too. 4 of them, to be exact. i used to go target shooting, but it got to be pretty expensive. i suppose i should still go occasionally just so that i remember how to use them, should that ever become necessary.
my husband doesn’t like them. my ex didn’t like them either. the fact is, i feel safer with them close by.
i understand why some people are against guns, and are for strict gun control, and even outlawing them altogether. many of their arguments make a lot of sense. i just disagree. and while i do support gun control, and went through a pretty stringent procedure when i got my first gun in new jersey, i had no problem waiting the 2 months for all the background checks and finger printing to be approved. here in az, you can see regular people walking around with a holster on their belt, and that’s a bit over the top to me. but i’ll take the good with the bad, and hope that these people aren’t broken. i just feel that if broken people are living among us, if they don’t have access to guns, they’ll have access to cars and knives and large rocks and a multitude of other implements of destruction.

Ammo is so expensive right now, it’s nuts. The cost of metal went waaaay up.
Anyway, I suppose being from Texas, I’m almost obligated to accept guns as pretty much normal. I don’t oppose the background checks, either, but really, it didn’t seem to stop Mr. Cho.

You can be almost 100% positive that any man who, AFTER THE FACT, claims he would have saved the day Rambo-style would have actually SHIT HIS PANTS had he been there that day.
Heros don’t brag; they just do.

“I don’t oppose the background checks, either, but really, it didn’t seem to stop Mr. Cho.”
i’ve known some fairly ill people who have managed to legally obtain firearms. and to be perfectly honest, i don’t believe regulation has any effect on whether or not criminals will be able to arm themselves. at this point in the u.s., i don’t believe it would do any good to outlaw guns. perhaps instead of spending money on pipe dreams like abstinence-only programs, our government should spend those funds on mental health care programs. i know, i know, i should stop that kind of crazy talk.

Heh, everytime I hear of a school shooting, I get “Jeremy” by Pearl Jam in my head.

you know, eventually i will get to the grim reality as well as the thought-provoking bits of this post and what inspired it, but for now all i can do is go,
TED NUGENT BAHAHAHAHAHA
it’s perfect really.
i swear it’s like Night of the Living Dead up in there. i really do have to write that “notes on the culture of the Undead” post one of these days…

Well said. Psychos exist, and I just don’t think we can legislate them into extinction.
